Using Communication Aids
I was 31 years of age before I got my first electronic communication aid, a Liberator, and that machine, difficult as it was to learn and use, really did "liberate" me. It's impossible to describe to anyone who has always been able to speak what it is like to have so many thoughts, feelings and ideas locked in your head and be unable to share them. Yes, I could communicate my basic needs to those who knew me well, but not much beyond that.
I am now on my fourth communication aid, a Tellus 3+ with Grid2 software. This has proved to be a real winning combination, enabling me to program independently to a much greater extent than ever before.
So what has having a communication aid meant to me? Well, it has enabled me to take control of my life, to live independently, to employ my own staff and, ultimately to set up my own business. It has also allowed me to express my feelings. And so much more!
I would be very interested to hear what the ability to communicate means to you. Just join the Forum and post your thoughts there.
